CapeNature’s mandate is to manage and conserve the western cape's unique and fragile biodiversity. The freshwater ecosystems under our care are facing increasing pressure, and we are seeking a dedicated and passionate individual to join our Integrated Catchments Sub-Directorate to make a tangible difference.

The purpose of the Graduate Intern: Ecological Technician: Freshwater post to address specific bottlenecks in river and wetland management and alleviate a specific, measurable compliance and data bottleneck

RESPONSIBILITIES:

KRA 1: Ensure compliance to the National Water Act.

  • Conduct a comprehensive desktop audit to verify which CapeNature-managed reserves possess Water Use Licenses (WULs) or qualify under General Authorisations.
  • Identify reserves requiring WUL and assist in the WUL applications process.

 

KRA 2: Convert data into structured databases

  • Convert the faunal data and raw SASS scores and wetland health assessments into structured databases.
  • Assist with the validation and verification of SOB data. This ensures our reporting is defensible and evidence based

 

KRA 3: Coordinate and execute the field component of freshwater monitoring

  • Coordinate and execute the field component of freshwater monitoring.
  • Collate field data into site and technical reports and conduct literature searches to support WULA motivations and reserve management plans.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Young unemployed professional
  • A recent graduate (within the last 2 years) with a BSc Honours or MSc in Freshwater Ecology, Aquatic Science, Conservation Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • A strong academic understanding of the National Water Act (Act 36 of 1998) and its implications for water resource management.
  • Practical experience with or formal training in SASS5 biomonitoring is essential.
  • Knowledge of wetland assessment protocols and freshwater fauna identification would be a strong advantage.
  • No criminal record

 

COMPETENCIES

  • Highly organised, with a meticulous eye for detail (critical for desktop audits and data management).
  • A self-starter who can manage their own workload while being a strong team player.
  • A valid EB08 driver’s licence and willingness to conduct fieldwork in remote areas.
  • A passion for solving complex problems at the intersection of conservation science and policy
  • Good oral and written communication skills, including a friendly and helpful disposition, in order to provide a professional and effective support function to colleagues and other clients.
  • An active learning, innovative and problem-solving approach to job, with good organisation skills.
  • Ability to work to a detailed schedule and meet deadlines and keep a detailed log of work-related activities for reporting purposes.
  • Good computer literacy, including the MSOffice suite, digital file management and the ability to operate the relevant GIS software efficiently.
